Wall Panels or Tiles for a Dunfermline Bathroom?

Small bathroom with shower panels and tiled basin wall

Panels and tiles need comparing as complete wall finishes. Look at their appearance, preparation, edges and care as well as the material price.

Look at the finish across a real wall

A small sample can hide the repeat of a strong pattern or the size of a visible joint. View a larger area where possible and hold samples upright beside the furniture and floor. Tiles add choices of size, layout and grout; panels have their own board sizes, joins and trims. Neither needs to be chosen in isolation from the suite. Our bathroom supply and installation service discusses the chosen surface with the fitting work. Bring the appearance you like, then check how that particular product would cover the actual bathroom rather than only one clear sample wall.

Ask what the existing wall needs

Explain loose tiles, damp marks or damaged areas you already know about. The selected finish requires a suitable surface and its own fitting method. Ask what removal, repair or levelling is included, and how a further finding behind the old material would be explained and priced. Covering a wall is not a substitute for addressing the condition underneath. You do not need to specify a technical system yourself. You need to understand which preparation is proposed for the chosen product and what remains to be checked, so its decorative face is not the only part of the job being compared.

Decide which areas receive the new material

Mark the height and extent of each wall finish. Include the places exposed by a smaller vanity or removed bath, along with pipe boxing and areas around the basin. Agree how new material meets paint or an existing surface that stays. Our bathroom costs and quote guide explains why coverage belongs beside the price. Shower walls alone are a different job from finishing the whole room. Keep those areas clear when comparing alternatives so a lower total is not quietly describing fewer completed surfaces or a surrounding task you will have to arrange separately.

Include corners, openings and wet edges

Ask how the chosen finish meets the window, corners, doorway and bath or tray. Include trims, visible joints and the work around pipe openings. These parts affect the appearance and need to suit the product's installation requirements. A water-resistant decorative face does not explain how the whole shower area is formed. Compare an edge sample with the main material if its colour matters to the room. Agree the proposed treatment before quantities are ordered. At a window, compare the edge or sill finish as well as the main wall. It is a visible part of the bathroom that a flat sample will not show.

Plan shelves and accessories before covering the wall

Give the fitter the selected mirror, screen, towel rail and shelf positions while preparation can still be planned. They may need suitable support behind the finish. A shelf built into the shower wall has different construction requirements from a surface basket, and a recess is not possible in every wall. Check where the usual bottles will stand and how they are reached inside the screen. Our modern materials and storage guide connects those useful details. Keep the actual products in the room plan rather than add an unspecified shelf after the new surface has already been completed.

Compare complete supplied and fitted options

If you are undecided, ask about alternatives for the same covered areas and layout. Include preparation, quantities, accessories, edges and fitting with the material. A price per panel or box of tiles leaves out much of that comparison. Keep any changed decorative option separate from the main agreed job. If one finish involves a different arrangement around a window or fixture, understand that result as well as its cost. The useful choice is the complete surface you want and can look after, not whichever material appears cheaper before the work needed to fit it has been included.

Read care instructions for the exact products

Panels, tiles, grout and seals can need different cleaning products or methods. Read the instructions for what is actually proposed, including any limits on abrasives. Check whether you can reach the corners, glass edges and gaps beside furniture. A smooth finish still has joints and boundaries to look after. Ask which accessible parts need routine attention and keep those instructions at handover. Do not choose on a general promise that a bathroom never needs maintenance. The practical comparison is whether the selected material and reachable surfaces suit your normal cleaning routine, with appropriate care for each product in the room.

Keep useful references and repair access

Save the material reference, colour and any supplied batch details, perhaps with a photograph of the packaging label. Ask whether spare pieces would be useful and how to store them safely; a future exact match cannot be assumed. Separately, understand how hidden plumbing or a removable panel can be reached without guessing which finish must come off. Keep that intended access clear when belongings return. Product information helps a supplier identify a later replacement, while access information helps explain a plumbing concern. Keep those records with the quote so a question about a damaged edge starts with the actual material and access arrangement, rather than an uncertain colour name.

Your checklist

  • Mark coverage and finished edges
  • Include preparation and accessory support
  • Keep product references and intended access clear
